The Upper Arlington area was first known to be the home of the Adena people, a prehistoric native tribe who was legendary for their elaborate burial sites and cone-shaped mounds. Hundreds of years after the ancient Adena culture were the Wyandot people who were forced out of the area by the growing U.S. Government. After the Revolutionary War, the new nation granted land in the area to returning soldiers as compensation for their service in America’s war for independence from colonial rule. In 1913, brothers and real estate developers Ben and King Thompson eventually founded the 840-acre area that would become Upper Arlington.
In 1916, the town’s development came to a halt when the National Guard came here to use the area as a training camp. They called it Camp Willis after Ohio’s governor at the time.

Nevertheless, when the camp was pulled out later that year, they continued developing and on March 20, 1918, Upper Arlington earned incorporation as a village with a population of 200 residents. One of the area’s earliest landowners, James T. Miller became Upper Arlington’s first mayor. On Feb. 8, 1941, Upper Arlington became a city and in subsequent decades a lot of land surrounding the city was annexed. This doubled the city’s land area while population.

The annexed property was part of Perry Township, which was home to a variety of farmers in the late 1800s. One of these farmers was Pleasant Litchford, a former slave who purchased his freedom and moved north to become a very notable citizen in the African-American community. The current high school sits on property he owned until he died in 1879. After World War II, there was a housing boom that resulted in development north of Lane Avenue. These new homes looked much different than the older core of the city.Eventually, the southern half of the city became the “Upper Arlington Historic District” (or “Old Arlington” ). In 1985, it earned designation as a historic site by the National Register of Historic Places.
